Sinemet Oral : Uses, Side Effects, Interactions

Sinemet 10-100

GENERIC NAME(S): Carbidopa-Levodopa

Uses

This combination drug is used to treat symptoms like Parkinson’s disease or Parkinson (such as stiffness, hardness, difficulty in walking). It is believed that Parkinson’s disease is due to very small amounts of naturally occurring substances (dopamine) in the brain. Levodopa turns into dopamine in the brain, which helps to control movement. Carbidopa prevents breakdown of the levodopa in the bloodstream, so more lavodopa can enter the brain. Carbidopa can also reduce some effects of levodopa such as nausea and vomiting.

How to use Sinemet 10-100

Take Sinemet with or without mouth directed by your doctor, usually 3 to 4 times a day.

Taking this medicine with food can help to reduce nausea. Avoiding a high-protein diet is best (it reduces the amount of levodopa in your body) unless it is directed by your doctor. Separate your dose of this drug as much as possible from any iron supplements or products containing iron (such as multivitamin with minerals). Iron can reduce the amount of this drug absorbed by the body. Contact your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Dosage is based on your medical condition and treatment response. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication on low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. This combination drug comes in different strengths with different doses of carbidopa and levodopa in each tablet. Make sure you have the right strength of both medicines. Your doctor can write Carbidopa alone to take this combination.

Use Sinemet regularly to get the most benefit. To help you remember, take it every day at the same time.

Due to the next dose, some patients may experience “wearing-off” (worsening of symptoms). There may also be an “on-off” effect, in which there is a sudden short-term rigidity. If these effects occur, contact your doctor for potential dose adjustments that may help in reducing this effect.

Do not stop taking Sinemet without consultation with your doctor. When this medicine gets reduced or suddenly stops, some conditions may get worse. Your dosage may need to be gradually reduced. (See also Side Effects section.)

Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.
