Matulane

GENERIC NAME(S): Procarbazine

Uses

Procarbazine, sold under the trade name Matulane among others. This drug is used with other chemotherapy drugs to treat Hodgkin’s disease (also called Hodgkin’s lymphoma). Matulane comes under a category of medicines known as alkylating agents. It works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells.

How To Use Matulane

If you start taking Matulane or Procarbazine and every time you get a refill, then before you are available from your pharmacist, please read the Patient Information Letter. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take Matulane as a prescription by your doctor, usually daily once or twice. It is usually taken for a 2-week period, then stopped for a time and is repeated. This is called the treatment cycle. Do not chew or crush capsules before swallowing. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication on low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.

Dosage is based on your medical condition, reaction to treatment, age, body size and other medicines that you are taking. Be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you use (including Prescription Drugs, NonPrescription Drugs and Herbal Products).

Use Matulane regularly to get the most benefit. To help you remember, take it at the same time every day.

Do not stop taking this medicine, even if you have nausea. If you vomit immediately after taking the dose, then immediately contact your doctor for instructions.

Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, sleep deprivation, muscle / joint pain, or skin can be black. Nausea and vomiting can be serious. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe medicine to prevent or relieve nausea and vomiting. By eating many small meals, not eating before treatment or limiting activity, some of these effects may be reduced. If any of these effects gets worse or worse, then tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Temporary hair loss can occur. Normal hair growth should return after treatment is over.

People using Matulane or Procarbazine can have serious side effects. However, your doctor has prescribed this medicine because he or she has decided that the gain for you is more than the risk of the opposite effect. Careful monitoring by your doctor can reduce your risk.

Tell your doctor immediately if you have a serious side effect, including: abnormal bleeding / injury, diarrhea, tingling / numbness of the legs, changes in mental / mood (like delusions, depression), mouth / lip wound.

Matulane can reduce your ability to fight infection. This can make you more likely to get a serious (rarely fatal) infection or to make any infection you have defected. Tell your doctor immediately if you have any symptoms of infection (like sore throat which does not go away, fever, chill).

If you have a serious side effect, get medical help, such as: seizure.

This drug can rarely cause the attack of hypertension (high blood pressure), which can be fatal. Many drug and food interactions can increase this risk (see how to use and drug interaction section). Very rarely, people with cancer treatment with this type of medicine have developed other cancers (such as leukemia). If you have some type of chemotherapy or radiation treatment, then your risk is high. Talk to your doctor for more information.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, if you see symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, get medical help, such as: rash, itching / swelling (especially the face / tongue / throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Precautions

Before taking Matulane or Procarbazine, tell your doctor or pharmacist whether you are allergic to it; Or if you have any other allergens. This product can have passive elements, which can cause allergic or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially: bleeding / blood problems, current / recent / return infections, kidney disease, liver disease, radiation therapy.

Matulane may make you dizzy or drowsy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy or dry. Unless you can safely do it, do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires caution. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis).

Avoid alcoholic beverages and products while taking this medicine as there can be severe malfunction / cramping, nausea, vomiting, headache, and flushing in the stomach.

Avoid smoking while using this drug. Smoking while using this drug increases the risk of lung cancer development. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

This medicine can make you more sensitive to the sun. Keep your time limited in the sun. Avoid Tanning Booths and Sunlamps. Use sunscreen on the outside and wear protective clothing. Tell your doctor immediately if you have sunburned or have blisters / redness on the skin.

Matulane can make you more likely to get infected or spoil any existing infection. Avoid contact with people who have an infection, which can spread to others (like chickenpox, measles, flu). Consult your doctor if you have been exposed to any infection or more details.

Do not immunize / vaccinate without the consent of your doctor. Avoid contact with people who have recently received live vaccinations (such as breathing through the flu vaccine nose).

To reduce the chances of being cut, hurt or injured, use caution with sharp items such as razors and nail cutters and avoid activities like contact sports.

Before surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products that you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs and herbal products).

Children may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, especially shaking (tremors), loss of consciousness, or trips.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or have plans to get pregnant. You should not be pregnant while using Matulane. Matulane can harm an unborn child. When using this drug, ask about the reliable forms of birth control. If you become pregnant, then talk to your doctor immediately about the risks and benefits of this medicine.

It is unknown if this medicine passes in breast milk. Due to the potential risk to the baby, it is advisable not to breastfeed while using this drug. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Over Dose

If someone is treated and has serious symptoms like having trouble going out or breathing, call 911. Otherwise, call the Poison Control Center immediately. US residents can call their local venom control center at 1-800-222-1222. Canadians can call a provincial poison control center.

Notes

Do not share this medication with others.

Labs and / or medical tests (such as full blood count, kidney / liver / lung function) should be done before you start taking this medicine and when you are taking it. Keep all medical and lab appointments.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, then as soon as you remember, take it. If it is near the next dose time, then leave the thesis dose. Take your next dose at regular times. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets.
